    More than anything Jana was a friend and an inspiration to everyone she touched.  Jana had a smile and laugh that were absolutely contagious.  She gracefully juggled being a healthcare executive and a mom-of-the-year for her children.  Jana had an attitude that you can conquer anything you set your heart and mind to.  You saw it in her successful career, you saw it in her beautiful children and you saw it in her courageous battle.  To the final moment Jana never gave up.  So often during the tough times of her battle Jana was the one giving the encouragement to those who loved her.  Jana taught so many to live each day to the fullest, to be grateful for every moment, day and memory that you are blessed with, to always push on, and to make sure that those you care about always know your love.

    This award is about the beautiful, loving, endearing spirit of Jana.  It is a way for her precious spirit to be kept alive and the incredible qualities she possessed to be aspired to and recognized.  The qualities that we will look for in those that receive this award will be a combination of a mentor, role model, advisor, family person, a person not afraid to struggle, whose combination of endearing qualities draw others in.

    PWH is seeking a candidate with qualities that define their success professionally and personally, which were an inherent part of Jana Quinn and her experiences.     Professional Women in Healthcare is once again this year giving two scholarships to women who would like to attend the annual HIDA Expo in Washington DC September 24th-26th 2013 and would not otherwise be able to attend.  You do not have to be a PWH member to apply.  The winners will receive roundtrip airfare, two night's hotel at the Gaylord Hotel, invitation to PWH Annual Meeting and an Expo pass.

    Please briefly describe your work experience.
    I began my career in healthcare manufacturing and distribution with Bovie Medical Corp. in 2006 as Inside Sales Support/Admin Assistant to Rob Saron & Janis Dezso. I was fresh out of college holding a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of South Florida. Over the years, I have learned how to use excel, experienced the vast world of medical distribution and become an increasingly vital member of the Bovie sales & marketing team. In 2011, I was promoted to Associate Marketing Manager which is the position I hold today.

    How long have you been in the healthcare industry?
    Seven years.

    How long have you been evolved with PWH?
    I joined PWH in 2007.

    What do you think the benefits of PWH are? How have you benefited from being involved?
    PWH has given me the tools, support and confidence to take risks, learn new skills and build myself a pretty incredible network.

    If you had to give someone new in the industry two pieces of advice, what would it be? (This could be related to your personal experiences, advice on personal life or professional)
    1.       Find an organization such as PWH to help you build your network and navigate through our industry.
    2.       Embrace the unknown and take the leap. Failure is okay as long as we learn from it and adjust.

    In our most recent Newsletter, PWH Chair Pam Wedow mentions Amy Cuddy's TED Talk on the Power of Body Language and states "I would highly recommend it. It's 21 minutes of some of the best advice that will help us all be stronger, smarter, and more influential.     Please briefly describe your work experience.

    I’ve always been involved with marketing, in some capacity.  I started off my career, in advertising sales, selling for the Chicago Sun-Times, and then ESPN/ABC.  In 2009, my mom and I started KBK Communications, which provides marketing services to the healthcare industry.

    How long have you been in the healthcare industry?

    Since 2009, but I’ve always been around PWH for a long time, as my mom has been involved since its inception.

    How long have you been evolved with PWH?

    See answer above....since I was in college :)!

    What do you think the benefits of PWH are? How have you benefited from being involved?

    Besides the friendships (which I love), I’ve learned a lot about leading a team.  I’m also a part of the new Mentoring program, and I’m learning a TON from my mentor.

    If you had to give someone new in the industry two pieces of advice, what would it be? (This could be related to your personal experiences, advice on personal life or professional)

    1. Get involved.

    2. Related to #1, step outside of your comfort zone :).

    According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Both the number of unemployed persons, at 11.7 million, and the unemployment rate, at 7.6 percent, were little changed in March.” Job loss is never fun. It can create a difficult and stressful time if you allow it to.

    While those labor statistics are not comforting to the unemployed, there are things you can do to get a job and possibly add a new positive chapter in your life. 

    Greg David, President of Greg Laka & Company one of the oldest executive search firms in the country, says “attitude and perspective” is key. For example “for those that see a job search as a gift and a positive opportunity, the journey is shorter, more productive, healthier, and more fun. They are also better at a job search whereas others struggle to survive, these individuals thrive. It is a choice, outlook, and attitude.”

    He offers five tips to survive as a job seeker:

     1) Unemployment is a gift and opportunity to control your future: When you are working, you have little to no control over the most important commodity in your life: time. When you are working, essentially you surrender control over the most important commodity in your life to someone else or an institution. When you are unemployed, you are given complete control over your most precious commodity and you are the sole authority over that precious gift. What you do with it, how you manage it, and what you accomplish daily is the difference between unemployment being a struggle or a gift.

    2) Unemployment is a gift and opportunity to re-evaluate your life: Now that you have complete control over your most precious commodity, unemployment is like sabbatical for you to take a step back and take note of your entire being. You have such a wonderful opportunity to do a self-examination of your life: physical health, mental and emotional health, financial health, spiritual health, short/medium/long term goals, and hobbies, passions, interests. It is such a gift to be able to get a second chance to look at where you are, where you want to be going, and to make adjustments. This time to focus on your life can also be a very healing time to work on self-development and putting together a plan to advance more quickly towards a better version of yourself. Do things you have not done in a long time. Get your life in better order and a healthier state. Rekindle relationships and make new ones. Become more of that person you long to be. And even look at approaching change with a smile whether that be pursuing a lifelong interest or passion that you have never had the time for or always been fearful of doing. Take an educated risk and even do a career change if that has been an unfed hunger.

    3) Unemployment is a gift and opportunity to find balance: Redetermine all that is important to you and develop a blueprint where you can live the life in balance that you have always dreamt of, and come up with strategies to do that. It is essential you do this before you begin working again if you are to create the life balance that is essential to your long term happiness and health.

    4) Unemployment is a gift and opportunity to become more focused, which in turn helps you become more developed, more aware of others and yourself in turn, and form relationships that are beneficial to you and others. Get involved in a youth, church, mission or charitable initiative that you have always wanted to or never had time for. It can also be something as simple as working for a pet shelter or volunteer role at the local zoo, or at a food pantry or food kitchen helping to feed the hungry.Volunteering is not only is a great networking activity, but it also is a very good life enrichment activity.  Once you begin doing it, you’ll derive a multitude of very healthy benefits from focusing on others.

    5) Unemployment is a gift and opportunity to purge: Clean out that garage or attic that has been haunting you. Fix that broken back screen door that has been a nagging issue for years. Mend that broken relationship. Rekindle your spiritual relationship.

    I don’t think I’m alone when I say time is moving so fast and with the hundreds of meetings, conference calls, emails, texts and phone conversations it seems we’re all asked to constantly do more in less time.

    Being stressed out is very nonproductive for me.  Then I remember some of the best advice that one of my first female mentors gave me, “If you want good health, good spirits and good business, you must make an effort to focus your attention on the goodness of things.”  Science has proven that positivity mitigates the negative effects of stress. 

    Take time to make time seems counter intuitive but incorporating just a few positive practices within my day really helps me to fend off the shark attacks of stress.  Some of those include taking a ten minute walk during lunch, taking a few deep breaths and stretching every hour or so, a few quiet moments of gratitude for the good things in my day, reading a daily positive affirmation, or sharing a laugh with a coworker over the joke of the day.  All of these small moments collectively work to help me shed the stress.

    In any field, having a professional mentor can help individuals develop and advance their careers. According to Melissa Heisler, life & business coach, women in the healthcare industry would greatly benefit from a professional mentor. Heisler says “healthcare professionals face increased stress and would benefit from mentors”. She says a mentor will help one feel “they aren’t alone”. Heisler says utilizing a professional mentor has helped shape some of the greatest athletes like Michael Jordan. Heisler says for example, “Michael Jordan had six coaches to help him be the one of the greatest basketball players”. While in the typical mentoring relationship, one participant has more experience, skill, knowledge than the other.  Many strong mentoring relationships provide an opportunity for both parties to learn from each other through the development of a respectful partnership. Heisler says there are two different kinds of mentors; a professional development mentor and personal mentor; someone who can help you handle the “work life” balance is essential. These findings are supported by a survey conducted by the American Society for Training Development.

    According to ASTD 75% of executives point to mentoring as playing a key role in their careers. Experts believe mentoring programs can be an integral part of an executives career advancement particularly women. Retention and productivity are often the result of a successful mentoring program.


    The top five reasons to be a mentor according to US News & World Report are::

    • Learn new things: Every generation has their strengths, and a mentor relationship can be a great way to learn from one another.

    • Share your knowledge with a young professional: Helping others may allow you to avoid “pitfalls” in your own career.

    • Develop leadership and management skills: Experts believe mentoring programs can be essential in an executives career advancement particularly women.

    • Give back to your industry: Mentoring young professionals can then fine tune their skills and improve their knowledge of the industry.

    • Develop a new relationship: By cultivating a new mentor relationship you can add new connections to your network.
